Growing in the Arts from a Young Age
Becky Strickland began to develop the elementary theatre program in 2005. This program was an offshoot of the drama program which was already in place at Maranatha Christian School. The goal of elementary drama is to allow the students to explore the stage and what it means to perform. This helps students to develop confidence, discover and develop theatre skills, and also learn to work as a group, supporting one another in a safe environment. Over the years the students have performed both in musicals and non-musicals, opening their eyes to the possibilities there are in theatre. Students who choose not to be on stage are given the opportunity to be a part of the team that develops the sets and props for the play. They also have the opportunity to be stage hands during the production. The process of learning dramatic skills begins as early as Kindergarten where Elise Nuefeld works with her K/1 class to put together a performance for the elementary extravaganza. The yearly Elementary Extravaganza is a true celebration of dramatic performances within our elementary school.
